History of the Health Sciences Library (HSL)

The Health Sciences Library began in 1847 with a collection of 519 volumes obtained at a cost of $829.96. Today, our collections have grown to over 121,000 cataloged books, over 1500 current journal subscriptions with extensive bound back volumes, over 12,000 historical volumes, and some 2,000 videotapes, CD-ROMs and other non-print materials. In addition, we have a resource-rich web site providing access to dozens of subject guides, over 1300 e-journals, e-serials, and databases.

Significant events in HSL's past are detailed up through 1994, along with a complete list of Librarians, in the Chronology.

HSL has occupied three locations on the South Campus: the original Capen Hall from 1953-1974, Stockton Kimball Tower from 1974-1985, and Abbott Hall from 1985 to the present.

Abbott Hall is the current name of the building that was constructed as Lockwood Memorial Library in the 1930s. Renovations including doubling the size of the facility, retrofitting the mechanical infrastructure, moving the entrance, and reconfiguring the space to accommodate an increasingly electronic information center.
