The Firefox browser includes many features HSL patrons may appreciate. This page includes tools, links and information for Firefox users at the University at Buffalo.
Users are generally advised to stay up to date with the most recent version of the Firefox browser. As of October 25, 2006, this is version 2.0 for Windows, Mac and Linux.
Assistance for Mac users
For changing preferences or managing privacy options in Firefox for the Mac, look under

Also, in Firefox, Control-Space simulates a right-mouse click wherever the cursor is, a feature that apparently does not work in Safari.
Search Plug-ins
HSL provides several UB-related search plug-ins for Firefox users. Click the following links to have Firefox automatically install each plug-in:
Please note that these plug-ins were designed for Firefox 1.5. They will work with Firefox 2.0, but have not been enhanced to work with Internet Explorer 7. New versions of these plug-ins are being developed and we anticipate making them available in January 2007.
Additionally, there are several non-UB search plug-ins of interest. Follow the link for more information and to install the plug-in:
Extensions
Think of extensions as little software programs that run inside Firefox, helping it to work better. There are several extensions for researchers that we can suggest. (Some of these extensions will not work in Firefox 2.0 currently but are expected to be updated in the very near future.)
Additional projects (some in testing):
- New Firefox 2/Internet Explorer 7-compatible search plug-ins (anticipated Jan 2007)
- Embedded autodiscovery code for plug-ins on appropriate pages (anticipated Jan 2007)
- Extending Firefox for Research workshop handout (COMPLETED)
- HSL Toolbar (in development, being reconfigured)
- UB Libraries Database search plug-in (in development)
- SFX/DOI Article Resolver (in development)
