UB Libraries Listening to You

You speak: we listen and take action! The University Libraries conducted the national LibQUAL+™ user surveys in 2002, 2004, and 2007. These surveys provided valuable information and perspectives on how to make library services, collections, electronic access to resources, and facilities more responsive to your needs. The changes and actions outlined below are some of the direct results of your survey responses, feedback, and comments.

Library Places
  • Spacious entrance lobbies in the Capen and Lockwood Libraries, featuring flat screen TV monitors, laptops, new decor and lighting.

  • Opening of the UB Libraries Annex , an offsite storage facility for low-use library materials.

  • Full Wireless technology coverage throughout University Libraries spaces.

  • Ongoing planning for the redesign and reuse of library space to create effective learning spaces, group study and seminar rooms, inspirational environments.

  • Planning for a new Cybrary in the Health Sciences Library.

  • Establishment of the Capen Multimedia Center where video, microform, and digital media are brought together with technologies to facilitate use.

  • QuickConnect computers added inside and directly outside library entrances.

Library Hours

  • The Undergraduate Library (ground and first floors of Capen) is open continuously from 12 noon on Sunday through 9 PM Friday in response to student requests for access to study space, group study rooms, computers, and books.

  • The Health Sciences Library is open extended evening hours on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

  • The Law Library opens at 7:30 AM weekday mornings to accommodate use before 8:00 AM classes and exams.
  • Instant Librarian offers extended evening hours until 10pm, and 11pm during exam periods.

Digital Information Resources Accessible from Home or Office
  • Expanded the selection of high quality, authoritative research databases accessible to UB faculty, staff, and students on and off campus through the UB Libraries website .

  • Over 40,000 journals available full-text online.

  • Created My Library Card on the MyUB portal to allow you to see what you have checked out, and to facilitate easy renewal of materials.

  • Introduced "Multi-Search" online search tool to facilitate simultaneous searching across multiple databases.

  • Created the Electronic Journal Holdings website to easily link users to electronic journals available in databases.

  • Created the digital gateway, UBDigit, and populated it with unique UB digital collections.

  • Established the Help A to Z website that responds in a timely manner to issues and needs as they arise.

  • Enhanced the Libraries' ILLiad interlibrary loan system to allow you to more easily request materials not available at UB and to streamline receipt of materials.

Research Collections
  • Continued effective collaboration with SUNY and other regional or state consortiums to increase SUNY-wide access to major digital products and databases..

  • Expanded investment in deep archives of electronic publications from the 1800s and beyond.

  • Increased access to and visibility of the Libraries' treasure collections through the creation of websites and digital resources, enhanced exhibits and public events programming.

  • Initiated production of web-based guides incorporating metadata to increase awareness, research potential, and use of collections held in the University Archives.

  • Resources by Subject web pages highlight the most important databases for each academic field, as selected by subject librarians.

Library Services
  • Information literacy initiatives promote student development of lifelong learning skills.

  • Establishment of vigorous Development/Fund-Raising program for the Libraries, including the Support Our Libraries web presence.

  • Services and content, including podcasts, developed for PDA users in the Health Sciences.

  • UB Libraries presence on Facebook® and YouTube®.


  • Initiation of Blog format for "Libraries News and Announcements" and also a targeted Libraries Blog for undergraduates.

  • Librarians expand services to academic departments with office hours on site in departments, enhancing outreach and increased availability for individual research consultations.

  • Printing services enhanced with faster production, shorter wait lines, as well as availability of color copies.


  • "Save time... Ask a Librarian" marketing initative incorporating signage, web video and Blogs.


  • Redesigned the Library Skills Workbook and augmented the Research Assistant online instruction modules.

  • Libraries' Billing Office accepts Campus Cash and credit card payments.

  • Librarians and staff hired across the Libraries, expanding expertise in academic disciplines and technology, and electronic resources management.
