A review article reviews a particular topic or a particular field, often over a period of time, say for the last five years, or perhaps the last 25 years. A review article does this by summarizing the previously published literature on the topic or research field and by putting this summary into some kind of perspective or context - authors of review articles often organize their articles chronologically so that they provide an historical overview of their topic, for example. A good review article collects a large amount of related information in one place and, therefore, helps the reader get an overall picture of the subject of the review. In addition, a review article, because it summarizes the work in a particular field or on a particualr topic, provides a reader with references to primary and secondary sources and possibly to other reviews. A review article, then, serves to identify and summarize the major developments, key discoveries, important ideas and concepts, and key players (researchers, scientists, inventors, sponsoring government agencies) in a particualr field or for a particular technology--and an integral part of the article is its bibliography (or list of references). (Review articles often appear in IEEE Spectrum, which you can browse online to get a better sense of what a review article encompasses and how it is organized.) For your assignment, you are being asked to conduct a literature search and write a review article on a topic. Below is a suggested outline for you to follow: An Introduction, which defines and describes your topic, the technology involved, its applications, etc. A Methods Section, which describes how you went about your literature search (what databases did you search using what search terms? what kinds of literature did you consult - journal articles? books? patents? technical reports? what were the steps in your search - in other words, what was your search strategy?) A Discussion Section, in which you summarize the literature you have assembled and read. Your summary of the published literature should be presented in such a way that a reader gets a clear sense of the development of the technology over time and its application to whatever problem you are investigating. A Summary Section, in which you conclude by describing the current state-of-the-art of your topic/technology and perhaps future directions. A Bibliography, in which you list all of the literature sources you cite in your review article, following the formatting conventions given in the Information for IEEE Magazine Authors. |
