Welcome to the city of Manhattan, New York Neighborhoods Map. A city such as New York is made up of many distinct neighborhoods, with a variety of features and histories making each unique in its own way. Though the boundaries and names for these neighborhoods vary slightly depending on the source, several published works provide generally accepted names and boundaries. New York City has 5 boroughs, 59 community districts and hundreds of neighborhoods. This map focuses on the borough of Manhattan only at this time. A complete map of all NY neighborhoods, compiled by the NYC the Department of City Planning is available showing the entire city. The UB Manhattan Neighborhoods Map is based on the maps and descriptions found in The Encyclopedia of New York City, edited by Kenneth T. Jackson, published: New Haven, Ct.: Yale University Press, 1995. The following base maps used are from the New York State Department of Transportation editions of the USGS 7.5 minute topographic series, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration): Brooklyn Quadrangle, New York, 1986. Central Park Quadrangle, New York-New Jersey, 1986. Jersey City Quadrangle, New Jersey-New York, 1986. Yonkers Quadrangle, New Jersey--New York, 1990. For the study of New York City neighborhoods, there are several electronic sources: The Digital Atlas of New York City by Professor William A. Bowen is a good source of information based on census data of 2000. Another map source providing information on neighborhoods of the five boroughs is: New York: A City of Neighborhoods by the New York City Department of City Planning. Manhattan consists of almost 40 neighborhoods varying in size, function, and historic significance. These current neighborhoods are described by location within the city, community associations, and cultural and ethnic history. When this site is complete, you may access pages for each neighborhood through either the full-size clickable Neighborhoods Map, or the Neighborhoods Map KEY.
