"Gentlemen! Take off your hats to The old Guard of the Army!"
--MAJOR GENERAL WINFIELD SCOTT, MEXICO CITY SEPTEMBER 1847

The 3d US Infantry (The Old Guard) is the Army's oldest active infantry regiment, created as "The First American Regiment" in June of 1784 to police and protect the western boundaries of a young United States. Older than the Constitution, the regiment has participated in most of the major conflicts in American history. Because of its record of service, the regiment represents the nation and the United States Army to the world as the premier ceremonial unit in the nation's capital.

The Old Guard Museum depicts the history of the regiment's service to the nation in war and peace, and its modern roles as protector of the capital and ceremonial representative of the nation.

The Old Guard Museum is on historic Fort Myer, Virginia, adjacent Arlington National Cemetery. It is within sight of the parade field where the first Army aviation flights occurred in 1908, and is two blocks from the stables for the Army's last horses.
The museum tells the story of the regiment in several galleries.

The Old Guard Museum also exhibits material relating to the history of Fort Myer and the defense of the nation's capital since 1789, changing exhibits of military art, and special programs.

"Mr. President! These are the men who saved your army!"
"Yes, I have heard of them...."
