Practitioner Education
A PROGRAM FOR TAX PROFESSIONALS

What Exactly is Practitioner Education?

Practitioner Education offers training to persons who prepare tax returns or counsel taxpayers for a fee. This program is an important part of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Compliance Education efforts because tax professionals prepare approximately one-half of all returns filed.

What are the Benefits?

As part of this program, practitioner institutes are held to:

• Alert the participants to tax law changes;
• Help improve the quality of returns; and
• Reduce errors that require costly processing which cause delays in issuing refunds to taxpayers.

Who May Be a Sponsor?

Practitioner Institutes are sponsored by qualified educational institutions, state and local governments, professional and other non-profit organizations. Participants include CPA's, accountants, tax attorneys, and other tax professionals. Often, county farm agents and representatives from business, labor, and government attend as well. Classes are usually held in cooperation with a college, university, state bureau of revenue, or professional accounting group.

What is the IRS Role?

To further assist practitioners, IRS district offices periodically hold meetings with practitioners at which time they have the opportunity to discuss their needs and provide the Service with input on topics they would like to see addressed in the Practitioner Education Program.

The IRS also provides practitioners with information on the most common errors made by practitioners on Forms 1040, 1040A, and 1040EZ. This information is provided to national practitioner organizations who provide this information to their members through newsletters and include it in their training materials.

How Do I Find Out What is Available Locally?

Complete the Practitioner Education Program Interest Form on the reverse side. Mail it to the IRS Taxpayer Education Coordinator nearest you, listed on the other side of this brochure. Send any other questions or inquiries to the same address or call the number listed for your area. The IRS will provide you with information about locally scheduled practitioner institutes.

Qualified tax professionals who would like to volunteer to acquaint fellow practitioners with the latest developments in the tax field might enjoy serving in this program. To find out how your services can be utilized, call the IRS Taxpayer Education Coordinator nearest you.
