Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)
information for the 1999 Federal Income Tax Return

The EITC is for some workers whose earnings are less than a certain amount. Because it is a "credit," the EITC is subtracted from the amount of tax owed — reducing the tax owed and maybe even giving the eligible worker a refund even if no taxes are owed.

There are two ways to get the EITC:

• subtract the EITC from the taxes owed at the end of the year (on federal income tax return)
• request for a portion of the EITC any time during the year (through employer) and receive "advance" $$$ throughout the year in the company pay. This is called Advance EITC. And, when it comes time to file, the worker may still have the extra credit to subtract (on federal income tax return) from taxes owed.

The IRS is committed to helping everyone who is eligible receive this credit. To reach that goal, we need your assistance in getting the message out. The IRS has developed the following free materials to publicize the availability of the EITC and to provide information on eligibility rules. These promotional materials are available to you. Please order as many as you need to let your customers (eligible employees or their employers) know about the EITC.
