ABSAROKA-BEARTOOTH WILDERNESS REGULATIONS

  1. The 1964 Wilderness Act prohibits the following:
  1. Group size in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness is limited to 15 people and 15 combined pack and saddle stock.
  2. Camping within 200 feet of any trail, lake or stream is prohibited in the Absaroka--Beartooth Wilderness. Evidence of previous use does not necessarily qualify a campsite location as acceptable.
  3. Only pelletized feed, processed grain (rolled), or cubed hay that is certified weed seed free by an authorized Federal, State, or County Officer is allowed.
  4. Stay limit is 16 days. Camping equipment, personal property, or supplies cannot be left unattended (cached) for more than 24 hours.
  5. Shortcutting a switchback on a Forest Development Trail is prohibited.
  6. In order to minimize grizzly bear/human conflicts, ALL food items and other bear attractants must be acceptably stored unless attended during daylight hours. "Acceptable storage" includes storage in an "approved" bear resistant container, or suspended at least 10 feet above the ground and 4 feet horizontal from any supporting tree or pole. Please contact the local ranger district office for information on the specific grizzly bear food storage order and the complete definition of "acceptable storage".

LEAVE NO TRACE GUIDELINES

TRAVEL: Please stay on trails to avoid the cre-ation of multiple tracks and switchback cuts. When traveling off trail spread out and avoid fol-lowing any route that appears to have had previ-ous use. When encountering stock parties talk to the lead rider in a calm voice and step off the trail on the downhill side where your party is visible to the animals.

CAMPING: In popular areas use established sites. In pristine areas avoid using locations that show evidence of previous use. Dismantle and scatter any temporary structures such as tent poles or primitive sitting logs.

CAMPFIRES: Use campstoves in areas near tim-berline. If you choose to have a fire please use existing fire rings in established sites and keep them small. Remember, fire rings are not trash receptacles, many food packaging items, such as cans, k bottles and foil-lined packages, do not completely burn. Please clean your fire ring before you leave.

CLIMBING: Please help preserve a wild climbing experience by practicing "clean climbing".

LIVESTOCK: Check with the local district office for the latest conditions for stock feed near camp areas. Be sure to restrain animals at least 100 feet from water sources and in a manner that does not damage trees, tree roots and fragile vegetation.

WATER: Always wash yourself, dishes and other items at least 200 feet from water sources and use biodegradable soap.

SANITATION: To keep water pure, be sure to bury human waste at least 200 feet from water and 6-8 inches deep.

REFUSE: Pack out all garbage and litter. This includes all items such as cans and foil in your fire ring.
