LIBRARY OF CONGRESS JUNIOR FELLOWS PROGRAM, 2003
OBJECTIVES
To increase knowledge and use of the Library's collections throughout the nation
To help the Library inventory, chronicle and make available hitherto unexplored materials
To give selected fellows an opportunity to explore the Library's unique collections
To expose fellows to the challenging career opportunities available at the Library of Congress

INTRODUCTION
Fellows, working with primary source materials, will assist selected divisions
in fulfilling their mission to reduce the arrearage by organizing and documenting
archival collections, producing finding aids and bibliographic records, preparing
materials for preservation and service, and doing bibliographical research;
and, contribute to the Library's efforts to digitize its historical collections.

ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must either be enrolled in an ongoing academic program at an accredited
college or university at the junior or senior undergraduate level, or at the
graduate level, or have completed their degree since August 2002. Academic credit
for the fellowship work is at the discretion of the educational institution.
Noncitizens are eligible to apply -- proper work visas must be obtained by successful applicants prior to reporting to the Library.
STIPEND
Fellows will be paid a taxable stipend of $300 per week.
SCHEDULE
Fellowships, lasting two to three months, are available in the summer, according
to the needs and schedule of the Library. Fellowships begin in either May or
June, depending upon the availability of the selected fellow. Fellows work fulltime
(40 hours per week).
HOW TO APPLY
Applications must include the following materials:
1. Cover letter
indicating the subject area(s)/division(s) in which the applicant is interested,
and language abilities, if relevant.
2. Application for
Federal Employment (OF 612) or resume (including social securitynumber,
address, telephone number, date of birth and citizenship).
3. Declaration for
Federal Employment (OF 306)
4. Letter of recommendation
from an appropriate professor or employer attesting to the applicant's proficiency,
reliability and the feasibility of his/her carrying out projects.
5. Official Transcript
from the current or most recently attended university or college.
*Any applications received before March 1, 2003 will not be considered.

Because of continuing problems
with surface mail delivery to the Capitol Hill Complexes, we recommend that
you send any general inquires through email rather than the use of the regular
mail system. We also recommend that you send your application by Federal Express
or United Parcel Post to assure timely receipt by the Library.
SELECTION PROCESS
In order for an application to be considered, all materials must be received
by April 4. Applications will be forwarded to appropriate divisions, which will
arrange telephone interviews with the most promising applicants, based on materials
submitted. Applicants will be notified of the Library's decision in May.
