What is the RCR Program?

The Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) program consists of nine core areas which help ensure that research meets the highest level of scientific and integrity standards.

The nine core areas are:

  1. Collaborative Science
  2. Conflicts of Interest
  3. Data Management
  4. Mentor-Trainee Responsibilities
  5. Peer Review
  6. Publication Practices/Responsible Authorship
  7. Research Misconduct
  8. Use of Animal Subjects
  9. Use of Human subjects

Responsible Conduct of Research

RCR Resource Development Program

To facilitate the development of RCR education programs, the Office of Research Integrity created the RCR Resource Development Program in FY 2002 to support the creation of advanced RCR instructional materials by research, educational, and other organizations within the United States. The materials produced by this program are made available to the research community for free or at minimal cost, mainly through the ORI web site.

Educational materials in production have included videos, interactive web sites, online quizzes, and several learning modules on the nine core areas of RCR. Since its inception in 2002, ORI has invested over a million dollars to support numerous projects that create innovative RCR learning materials and online tools to promote RCR programs nationwide.

Requests for proposals are issued each fall on the ORI web site with a deadline at the end of February.

CGS RCR Project

ORI collaborates with the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) to integrate RCR training in education programs in U.S. graduate schools. Ten graduate schools are developing pilot projects.

RCR Workshops and Conferences Program

ORI offers a conference and workshop program to promote RCR and research integrity issues. Fiscal support and professional speakers are provided by ORI for RCR workshops or conferences. Funding up to $20,000 is available for each educational event.

ORI seeks proposals from institutions, institutional associations and scientific societies to collaborate with ORI in developing a conference, leadership summit, workshop, seminar, or other meeting.

RCR Program for Academic Societies

The RCR Program for Academic Societies encourages academic societies to provide leadership to the research community through initiatives designed to promote the responsible conduct of research and research integrity. The program was initiated in the fall of 2002 in collaboration with the Association of American Medical Colleges.

The awards provide funds to academic societies to specifically address some, or all, of the nine core components of the responsible conduct of research. Awards up to $50,000 are available.

ORI Website

The Education section of the ORI website contains an RCR Resource webpage that includes instructional resources produced with support from the RCR Resource Development Program and other products created by institutions, professional organizations, commercial firms, and funding agencies. The section also contains the ORI Introduction to the Responsible Conduct of Research and an RCR bibliography.

ORI Listserv

ORI currently offers three Listservs to promote professional discussion and provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and strategies for RCR, Research on Research Integrity, and institutional officials implementing the misconduct regulation.

RCR Expo

The annual RCR Expo showcases new and innovative RCR educational products and RCR training programs.

We encourage universities and businesses with RCR web sites, products, and model training programs to exhibit their products and programs to the thousands of researchers and research administrators who will be attending the conference.
