The Children With Disabilities online guide is a new initiative by the Coordinating
Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (the Council). As part
of their effort to promote a national agenda for children and foster positive
youth development, the Council's nine participating Federal agencies and officesthe
US Departments of Justice, Education, Health and Human Services, Housing and
Urban Development, and Labor; the Immigration and Naturalization Service; the
Office of National Drug Control Policy; the Corporation for National Service;
and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Preventionhave joined
forces to create this Web site to provide children with disabilities and their
parents access to a wide range of Federal, State, local, and national resources.
The Children With Disabilities Web site presents families, service providers, and other interested individuals with information about advocacy, education, employment, health, housing, recreation, technical assistance, and transportation. It contains material about a broad array of developmental, physical, and emotional disabilities, including learning disabilities, such as attention deficit disorder; debilitating illnesses, such as cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis, and cancer; and physical challenges, such as blindness and deafness. The Web site also provides assistance for children whose healthy development is threatened by social factors, such as poverty and abuse. Brief descriptions of the eight areas addressed by the online guide are presented here.
The Federal Resources page provides information about Federal agencies and offices, including those represented on the Council, and their funded and supported initiatives and resources.
The State/Local Resources page presents information about agencies, organizations, and programs that serve all 50 States, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, and federally recognized tribes.
The National Resources page presents information about and links to national organizations and associations-such as the National Parent to Parent Support and Information System, Inc., the Childrens Defense Fund, and the National Transition Alliance for Children or Youth With Disabilities, among many others, that offer programs; information, and other resources.
The Calendar of Events page provides access to schedules of upcoming events from the ERIC Clearinghouse on Disabilities and Gifted Education, the National Mental Health Services Knowledge Exchange Network, the National Clearinghouse on Child Abuse and Neglect Information, LD Online, and the National Information Center for Children and Youth with Disabilities.
The Grants & Funding page provides links to information on funding opportunities from the Federal agencies and offices represented on the Council. It also presents suggestions for identifying funding opportunities from other Federal agencies and the private sector.
The Research & Statistics page provides links to journals, articles, and other publications. There is a search engine and a keyword list to help parents, children, and service providers search for additional information.
The Youth to Youth page contains activities, games, and a moderated online bulletin board where children can post messages to and share their experiences with other children.
The Highlights page presents the latest news and information concerning children with disabilities and identifies new features and resources on the Web site.
