Description

The Catalog of U.S. Government Publications (CGP) is the finding tool for federal government publications, both electronic and print. Direct links are provided to those that are available online. The “Locate in a Library” feature identifies nearby Federal Depository Libraries (Lockwood Library is one) where a particular print publication, or expert assistance, can be found. Material issued by government agencies can be in any format, including books, magazines, maps, and computer-readable files.

The underlying software is provided by Ex Libris, so the searching is similar to BISON. However, CGP is more robust because it has been optimized for government document searching. By going to Advanced Search one can select a subset of the catalog to search, such as Congressional Publications only or Internet Publications only.

Tip: The “SuDoc Number” is the key piece of information to write down.

Dates Covered

Includes more than 500,000 records generated since July 1976 and is updated daily. The CGP will grow to include records dating back to the late 1800s as the U.S. Government Printing Office builds the National Bibliography.

Print Counterpart

The CGP is the online counterpart of the Monthly Catalog of United States Government Publications, LOCKWOOD LIBRARY Reference: Z1223 .A18, which dates from the passage of the Printing Act of 1895. At present the Monthly Catalog should be consulted for pre-1976 indexing.
