Marshall, Jones and Park: French History & Culture and the University at Buffalo
April 6, 2009 – June 30, 2009

In honor of the visit to UB of Pierre Vimont, Ambassador of France to the US, the exhibit celebrates the distinguished scholars who have held the Melodia E. Jones Chair of French.  Marking the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Chair at UB, its scholars include Maurois, Foucault, Derrida, Butor, Serres, Federman, and the current scholar, Jean-Jacques Thomas.  The exhibit also features rare books from the Julian Park Collection, donated by UB’s founding dean of the College of Arts & Sciences.

The exhibit celebrates The Julian Park Collection of rare books bequeathed to UB by the founding dean of its College of Arts & Sciences.  Park nourished and developed French studies at UB and his collection particularly brings alive the Napoleonic Era.

The exhibit highlights the rapid introduction and obsolescence of audio, A/V, visual image, and computer storage media. The role of libraries and archives in preserving and migrating content in old formats is also addressed. See an antique stereoscope, an Eve of Destruction 45 rpm record, eight-track tapes, punch cards, 110 film and cameras, an original Visicalc 8” floppy, and more. How long will Blu-Ray last? This exhibit, co-curated by Jason Imbesi and Molly O'Brien, provides some historical background on the University's songs: the alma mater, fight songs, hymns, marches, and songs associated with specific schools of the university. The composers and lyricists of these songs include university faculty, staff, and students, as well as locally and nationally known composers. The exhibit also provides brief biographical information about many of the composers.

"The Rockefeller Foundation: Philanthropy and the Rise of Modern Healthcare"

Traces the support provided by the wealth of John D. Rockefeller for research into areas such as yellow fever and the development of penicillin, and other endeavors such as saving Jewish scientists from Nazi extermination. The exhibit panels showcase the following themes:
