Food Company Advertisements—ca. 1901

Advetisement for Lowney's Breakfast Cocoa

T
he advertisements on this page were typical at the turn of the century. These appeared in many of the popular magazines of the period, like The Ladies Home Journal and Harper's Bazaar.

Companies that exhibited at events like the Pan-American Exposition often noted so in their ads. The awarding of any honors at such events was certainly promoted.

Notice the use of the terms "wholesome," "healthful" and "nutritious." Keep in mind that there were few regulations to check false advertising and that clinical evidence was not necessary to back claims of nutritional value.
