Library Services for Patrons with Disabilities

The University Libraries attempt to accommodate the information needs of all users. Patrons with disabilities are encouraged to telephone before visiting in order to alert library staff of any specific needs; every effort will be made to accommodate reasonable requests.

Assistive Technology Stations

Assistive Technology Stations are available to current UB students, faculty, and staff and feature:

  • a 21" display with magnification capability (ZoomText 8.11)
  • a trackball mouse
  • enhanced keyboard options
  • speech-recognition software (Dragon Naturally Speaking 8)
  • screen reader software (Jaws 6)
  • and all software available on Cybrary Stations

Locations of Assistive Technology Stations:

North Campus

  • Capen Libraries: Undergraduate and Science & Engineering Libraries
  • Lockwood Library - 2nd floor Cybrary and Reference area

Microphones with headsets are available at the Capen and Lockwood Circulation Desks for 2-hr. in- library use at the Assistive Stations.

South Campus

  • Health Sciences Library - 1st floor Cybrary

For current UB students, faculty and staff members who are registered with the Office of Disability Services

May be eligible for certain additional services related to library use:

  • Reader Stations provide hardware and software to enlarge and read printed documents aloud and are available to current UB students, faculty and staff.
  • Article photocopying/book retrieval - Use the online form at http://library.buffalo.edu/libraries/forms/dis.html to request service.
  • Proxy borrowing services - A proxy card authorizes a designated third party to borrow books on behalf of the patron with disabilities. See Help AZ pages on Proxy Cards or ask at a Circulation Desk for more information.

For alumni and guest users

Certain public-access workstations within the Libraries are wheelchair accessible. Also available are Aladdin text magnifiers located in the reference areas of the Lockwood and Capen Libraries.
