Bruner Project
Spring 2000 |
The Bruner Website is comprised of individual award entries which in turn contain various types of documents. Before scanning, it is important to identify the document type, since that will determine the standards used in the dig
itization process.
There of four basic document types:
Once the document has been identified and scanned (see Bruner Project Scanning Procedures), it must be
named.
This includes perspective sheets, abstracts, executive summaries, articles, background information, etc.
Includes siteplans, sketches, blueprints, architectural renderings, etc.
Color and B&W. Some photos are stand-alone, while others may be part of an article or brochure.
Logos, PR materials, brochures, posters, etc.
Filenames should be descriptive of the content of the scanned document. This will ease the process of identifying the file during the conversion-display portion of t
his project. The key is to be consistant. When naming the files, try to adhere to the following guidelines (keeping in mind that there are of course, ALWAYS exceptions.)
|
When scanning images, all files must be saved as uncompressed TIF images (file extension .tif.) The table at right lists the text documents from a 1999 entry as well as the corresponding filenames. All entries will (or should) contain these text documents as they are required parts of the application.
* Multiple page documents use the format: [filename]-1.tif, [filename]-2.tif, etc.

Each entry will also contain supplementary materials, including articles, promotional materials, images and graphics.
Other documents which fall into the "supplemental material" category are:

The Bruner Project UNIX account is housed on the libraries' Elmwood server. Once the authorized account is accessed (see Scanning Coordinator for details) type bruner [enter] to go directly to the Bruner Project region.
For this example we will use the 1995 entry, "Crane's Roost."
To access the archival image files, type:
Here is the layout for Crane's Roost's archival image files:
This is the structure for the display image files in the Crane's Roost entry:
bruner/
tiff/
cranes_roost/
abstract.tif
art1-1.tif
art1-2.tif
devper1-1.tif
devper1-2.tif
... etc.
To access the display files for "Crane's Roost" start by typing bruner [enter]. All 1995 winners and finalists can be found in the 1995/ directory. Entries which were not winners or finalists are in the 1995a/ directory. (This pattern continues for
1997 and 1999 entries. "Crane's Roost" was neither a winner nor a finalist, so type:
cd 1995a
The listing will show a number of subdirectories corresponding with the various parts of the entry (abstract, perspective sheets, graphics, etc.) Within each of these subdirectories are the individual image files and the html pages on which they are displ
ayed.
