Devil's Hole State Park
Devil's Hole State Park overlooks the lower Whirlpool rapids. A wildly beautiful walkway leads down from the park along the turbulent Niagara River 300 feet into the wooded gorge and offers an up-close, spectacular view of the gorge's rapids. Devil's Hole has picnic areas, hiking, and nature trails. A popular spot for fishermen.

Whirlpool State Park
Whirlpool State Park has two levels--the upper, or street, level has many overlooks with spectacular views of the swirling waters of the rapids, the whirlpool and the Niagara River Escarpment. Visitors picnic and children use the playground at this level. The lower, or river, level is accessible by walking the 300 feet of trails and steps that descend into the gorge. This level has several nature trails and access for fishing.

BOTANICAL GARDENS IN BUFFALO AND ACROSS THE BORDER IN CANADA

Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens

The Gardens showcase seasonal flower shows under the domes of a 12-room Victorian glass conservatory situated on the 11.3-acre park designed by New York City’s Central Park designer, Frederick Law Olmstead. Built in the 1890s, the permanent collection includes flowers, cacti, fruit trees, palms, and orchids from around the world. Listed on the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places.

Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens and Butterfly Conservatory

The Gardens include a herb garden, vegetable garden, rock garden, and splendid arboretum. The grounds are also home to one of North America's largest collection of free flying butterflies. This year-round exhibit showcases a wide variety of butterflies from around the world in a lush, rainforest-like setting.

Royal Botanical Gardens

Approximatetly an hour’s drive from Buffalo in Canada, the Royal Botanical Gardens is home to the world's largest lilac collection, over 100,000 spring bulbs, an acre of iris, and two acres of roses. Encompassing more than 2,700 acres, the Gardens offer spectacular displays of beautiful flowers while protecting a wilderness of high cliffs, deep ravines, and wetlands.

Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society

The Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society is one of the oldest regional historical societies in the country. Today, more than 80,000 artifacts documenting the area's cultural heritage, as well as 20,000 books, 200,000 photographs, and 2,000 manuscripts, are housed in the Historical Society building. Originally built for the Pan-American Exposition in 1901, the building is now a national historic landmark.

Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum

The Karpeles Library is the world's largest private holding of important original manuscripts and documents. Among the treasures housed at the seven museum locations in the U.S. are the original draft of the "Bill of Rights of the United States," the original manuscript of "The Wedding March," Einstein's description of his Theory of Relativity, the "Thanksgiving Proclamation" signed by George Washington, Roget's Thesaurus, and Webster's Dictionary. Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site

Following the assassination of William McKinley at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo in 1901, Theodore Roosevelt was inaugurated as our nation's 26th president in the library of the Wilcox Mansion. It is the only National Park Service site in Western New York, and one of just five inaugural sites located outside of Washington, DC. Visitors can enjoy guided house tours, architectural walking tours, permanent and changing exhibits, and period gardens.

Frank Lloyd Wright's Darwin Martin House

The Darwin Martin house is distinguished from most of Wright's other prairie style houses by its unusually large size and open plan. It is said that Wright was given a virtually unlimited budget for this commission. The integrity of Frank Lloyd Wright's design is evident throughout the house, from its overall plan to the detailing. The house is currently under renovation, but it is still possible to arrange for a tour (see below):

Old Fort Niagara
