Descriptions about what types of collections are in the Archives: See a list of our University Records' Control Plan The history of the University at Buffalo and the contributions of the men and women who have shaped and guided the institution since its founding in 1846 can be found in the almost 1,000 collections of University Records. These collections are primary source material about the University. Collecting, organizing and providing access to these collections is why the University Archives exists. Arranged according to more than fifty record groups these collections contain the correspondence, financial data, reports, and other material produced by faculty and administrators back to the early years of the University. Included are a collection of papers of Millard Fillmore, chronological files of the correspondence of the University's chancellors and presidents since Samuel P. Capen, departmental records, committee minutes, master plans and other planning documents, University budgets, and records which outline the steps required for staging events such as commencements or a UB presidential inauguration. University and Student Publications The extensive collection of University and Student Publications describes the rich history of the University and the activities of students. The University Archives actively collects all publications of the University at Buffalo, of individual departments and offices, and all publications of student groups. Holdings include catalogs and bulletins beginning with the first catalog in 1846 of the University of Buffalo. Medical Department (now the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences), all student yearbooks beginning with the first issue of the Iris in 1898, and a file of the Bison, the student newspaper in the 1920s and 1930s. Newspapers, commencement programs, class schedules, departmental newsletters, alumni publications, and student publications of all types are available. Some of these publications are also available on microfilm in the Lockwood Memorial Library. Consult BISON - UB Libraries Catalog for more information. See a listing of our Faculty Papers The University Archives is proud to hold the papers of many distinguished University at Buffalo faculty. These papers include correspondence, manuscripts, records of committee work, and material related to activities outside the University. Biographical, History, and Clipping Files These three files are invaluable resources and are often the initial sources consulted for many inquires. The Biographical File is contained in forty file drawers and includes newspaper and periodical articles, photographs, and other material about the lives, careers, and deaths of UB faculty and staff, illustrious alumni, famous visitors, and benefactors of the University. Millard Fillmore, the first Chancellor of the University, has a file as does the current President John B. Simpson. Search the Biographical File database The History File contains pamphlets and unpublished papers on the history of the University and individual schools and departments. There are also sections related to the history of individual buildings and to special events in the history of the University such as anniversaries and presidential inaugurations. In the Clipping File are copies of articles from University, local, and national publications. The file is arranged according to the record group structure used for University records. The collection of Audio Recordings in the University Archives includes recordings of prominent visitors speaking on campus, meetings, and interviews with speakers, professors, and students on such topics as social problems, student politics, and campus events. The bulk of the more 1,500 recordings were produced by WBFO, the University' radio station. Also among the audio recordings are oral histories which staff in the University Archives conducted with University personalities or figures in the local area. The University Archives holds more than 25,000 photographic prints, negatives and slides dating back to the 1890s and over 600 films and video recordings dating to the 1930s. This material provides images of University at Buffalo faculty and staff, students, buildings, athletic events, commencements, and campus activities. Memorabilia, Artifacts, Iconography, and Broadsides As part of the holdings of the University Archives are items such as flags, pennants, trophies, beanies, and buttons. Artifacts include busts of University at Buffalo figures, spades used in ground-breaking ceremonies, items collected during the period of campus unrest in the 1960s and 1970s, diplomas, academic regalia, financial ledgers from the early part of the 20th century, and even a small amount of historic furniture. Also collected are broadsides-those posters and flyers that are seen around campus. UB Blueprints and Other Campus Architectural Material Blueprints for South Campus buildings are available in the University Archives, and numerous unprocessed collections of planning documents, blueprints, and other material related to the construction of the North Campus exist.
