Biographical Note

Frederick O. Gearing, Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at the University at Buffalo, was born in Morgantown, West Virginia in 1922. He attended Oklahoma City University, the University of Georgia and after World War II attended the University of Chicago where he received a bachelor's degree with Special Honors in the Social Sciences. He remained at Chicago and earned a Master's Degree in Anthropology in 1950 and in 1957 was awarded the Ph.D. in Anthropology also from the University of Chicago. Gearing has taught at Buffalo since 1969 and previous to that held appointments at the University of Chicago, University of Washington, and the University of California-Riverside.

From 1968 to 1969, Gearing was Director of the American Anthropological Association's Program in Anthropology and Education. He has held other selected appointments on the Council of Anthropology and Education, was a member of the Leadership Training Institute in Early Childhood, and is a past President of the Southwestern Anthropological Society. From 1970 to 1975, he was Director of the Project in Ethnography in Education in SUNY Buffalo's Department of Anthropology. He was Chairman of that Department from 1975 to 1979. Gearing was also the recipient of numerous grants and fellowships from the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Mental Health, the United States Office of Education, and the Center for the Study of Man at the Smithsonian Institution.

Gearing has conducted extensive research on the ethnography of education and cultural transmission. Dr. Gearing's other areas of research interest include "action research" and the Fox Indian Community in Iowa and rural villages of Greece's Exo Mani region. In 1994 Gearing was honored with the George and Louise Spindler Award from the American Anthropological Association. His published works include Priests and Warriors (1962), The Face of the Fox (1970), and Toward a Cultural Theory of Education, co-edited with Lucinda Sangree (1979). In 2002, Gearing and Mariekaty Georgota co-authored From the Edge of Greek Space: ExoMani.

Scope and Content Note

The papers of Frederick Gearing contain materials relevant to the Project in Ethnography in Education (1970-1975) and the Center for the Study of Cultural Transmission. The papers document Gearing's extensive research, as well as that of his colleagues and students, on the anthropology of education. The records include correspondence, drafts, grants, and proposals.

Arrangement

This collection is divided into four series: 'Administrative Papers,' 'Correspondence,' 'Project in Ethnography in Education,' and 'Related Research and Publications.' Within these series the records are subdivided into subseries and then arranged chronologically.
