Biographical Note

Harold A. Boner was born in Joplin, Missouri on January 29, 1904. He received an A.B. from Colorado University in 1928, an M.A. from Columbia University in 1930, and his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1947. His teaching appointments included: instructor at the University of Richmond (1930-1934), instructor at Columbia University from 1935-1941, and assistant professor at Adelphi College (1941-1947). Boner began teaching at the University of Buffalo in 1947 when he was hired as associate professor English.

Boner served as a member of the Personnel Committee and the President's Advisory Committee at Adelphi College. At the University of Buffalo he was a member of the Tutorial Committee, Admissions Committee, University Senate, and Publications Committee. He was President of the Buffalo chapter of the American Association of University Professors (1953-1954).

Boner produced numerous published poems and won the Guarantor's Prize of Poetry magazine (1929) and the Van Renesselaer Poetry Prize at Columbia University. Works of Boner's include Hungry Generations (1955), a study of Malthusian theory, and The Giant's Ladder, a biography of David H. Moffat (ca. 1962), as well as other works.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of manuscripts, notes, correspondence, literary magazines, and bibliography card files which Harold Boner used as resource materials in teaching 19th century English literature.

The bulk of the material relates to Giant's Ladder: David H. Moffat and his Railroad (1962), consisting of page proofs, typescripts, notes, and correspondence from Colorado railroad enthusiasts, pertaining to Colorado history. Also included is the typescript of Hungry Generations (1955), a work on Malthusian theory, as well as a copy of Gerard Manley Hopkins' masters thesis (1931).

There are seven letters from Harriet Monroe, editor of Poetry magazine, and correspondence with other editors and publishers such as Haniel Long and Idella Purnell ( Palms magazine), Yvor Winters, Stanley J. Kunitz, Ridgely Torrence and Malcolm Cowley ( The New Republic magazine), H.S. Lantham (The Macmillan Company), and Frank Stanton (president of CBS television network).
