Abstract: Printed material collected by Lipset and others at Harvard University between 1967 and 1971. Includes student publications; articles for scholarly journals and popular magazines; newspaper clippings and studies concerning student activist movements throughout the world, with emphasis on the United States, Latin America, and international student organizations. Also many unpublished studies about students originally prepared for presentation at conferences or for graduate courses. This collection reflects only a partial result of the material collected by the project.

Biographical Note

Seymour Martin Lipset (born 1933) is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and the Hazel Professor of Public Policy at George Mason University. Previously he was the Caroline S.G. Munro Professor of Political Science and Sociology at Stanford University (1975-1990) and the George D. Markham Professor of Government and Sociology at Harvard University.

A sociologist whose work has won numerous awards, Lipset's major work is in the fields of political sociology, trade union organization, social stratification, public opinion, and the sociology of intellectual life. He has also written extensively about the conditions for democracy in comparative perspective.

Lipset's published work has received many awardsHe is the only person to have been president of both the American Sociological Association (1992-2993) and the American Political Science Association (1979-1980). He has also served as the president of the International Society of Political Psychology, the Sociological Research Association, the World Association for Public Opinion Research, and the Society for Comparative Research.

Scope and Content Note

Research materials on student movements throughout the world, with emphasis on the United States and Latin America and on international student organizations, collected for a research project directed by Dr. Seymour Martin Lipset at Harvard University between 1967 and 1972. The collection consists primarily of printed materials, including student publications, articles from scholarly journals, newspaper clippings and other material, including many unpublished studies. The date span is primarily 1960 to 1972, but the files include materials from 1936 onward. Student organizations represented in the collection include the Coordinate Secretariat of the National Union of Students (1955-1966), the International Student Conference (1957, 1962-1968), the International Union of Students (1950, 1960-1971), the Institut Internationale D'Etudes Sur L'Education and the United States National Student Association. The research project resulted in several publications by Dr. Lipset and others.
