The Buffalo Kindergarten Union was established in 1892 at the suggestion of the Superintendent of the Buffalo Free Kindergarten Association. In 1896, the BKU joined the International Kindergarten Union and in 1920 the Kindergarten Section of the New York State Teacher's Association. The International Kindergarten Union became the Association for Childhood Education and ca. 1932 the Buffalo Kindergarten Association became the Buffalo Association for Childhood Education, a branch of the National Association for Childhood Education.
