UB's Student Unions

The Student Union has existed in many incarnations throughout the history of the University. At all times it has been one of the central fixtures of student life on campus.

1st Union
Harriman Hall was the Norton Student Union from 1933-1962
1934-1962

The Union "fills a vital need in the student's life. It is a place where he can find privacy if he desires or opportunities for making new friends."

-- Dorothy Haas, Director of Norton Union
(quoted in September 24, 1961 Courier Express article)

2nd Union
Squire Hall was the Norton Student Unions from 1962-1986
1962-1982

A Union "is essential to the quality of life and education for the entire University community."

-- UB Faculty Senate Executive Committee,
January 20, 1982

no union
No centralized union on campus
1982-1992

"For most colleges, a union is the center of student life, the hub of a university where all students can meet and exchange ideas, sharing the one thing they all have in common--the fact that they are students."

-- Generation, April 20, 1989

3rd Union
The present Student Union on the North Campus
1993-present

"The Student Union at the University at Buffalo acts as a hub for students to gather and meet to exchange ideas, eat lunch or take part in the many events that occur daily."

-- UB Office of Student Unions'
Buy-a-Brick Program website (recorded April 2004)
