PROBLEMS CATALOGING WEB SITES
Ellen McGrath, Lori Widzinski, Ellen Greenblatt and Diane Ward asked for advice on problems they had run into attempting to catalog web sites.
1. Wording to be used to designate the source of title, especially if it is taken from the title bar of a graphics browser. The term Title Bar cannot be used since a Title Bar as such is not part of a text browser; the contents of the Title Bar do display as simple text. After questionning whether it is necessary to cite a specific source (AACR2r requires source-of- title citation for Computer Files) and attempting to locate an online Web style manual for help, it was decided to use: "Title from title field".
Other sources could be: "Title from banner graphic", and, for title information taken from anywhere on the first level display, "Title from title screen".
2. How to treat multiple home pages listed when the relationship among them is not clear, e.g., A appears under B on one home page while B appears under A on another. (Cf. Roswell Park Cancer Institute home pages for examples). The consensus was not to try to be too specific or precise; try not to refer to these subordinate listings.
3. How to cite information that is not on the first screen of a multiple screen display. (Depending on which browser is being used the same material can be displayed on either one or multiple screens.) The consensus was to quote or otherwise use data that appears on any screen of the first level display. Only data that appears nowhere in that source of information should be bracketed. An example of information to be bracketed is the location or "place of publication" of Interlotto which produces the various state lottery home pages.
4. What e-mail address, if any, should be included in the bibliographic record? The consensus was to quote selectively from those given, with preference given to those that specify a function for that address, e.g., WebMaster, Info, rather than personal addresses.
HOME PAGES
Related to the last question was what questions should be put to maintainers of web home pages when we ask them for information as a preliminary to caloging those pages. The following three were agreed on:
When was the home page established?
Where is the home page located?
Who is responsible for the content of the home page?
NOON NEWS
Sue has arranged for a Noon News program on 16 November with online demonstrations of the records we have input into BISON. She will host it.
NEXT MEETING: The next meeting was scheduled for Monday, 13 November at 2:00 pm in 223 Lockwood.
Minutes prepared by Judith Hopkins.
