MINUTES
The minutes of the 9th meeting (16 October 1995) were approved with one correction: Rick McRae called attention to the fact that, in the first sentence under the heading HOME PAGES, the word 'caloging' should have been 'cataloging.'
PROBLEMS CATALOGING WEB SITES
Sue Neumeister read some questions that Celeste Neyerlin had sent to her. 1) If a listserv owner reports having a FAQ should it be included in the bibliographic record, and if so, how, especially if the FAQ lacks a URL of its own. The consensus was to put the information in a 500 note with as specific location/access information as is available.
2) If a listserv has a homepage, should both be cataloged and if so, should each contain a reference to the other? Judith Hopkins said she favored cataloging both but that whether or not that was done should probably be a matter of institutional policy and could differ from institution to institution.
Sue Neumeister asked what should be noted as the source of title if the same title appears on the title screen, as the banner title, etc. The consensus was to cite the title screen.
Linette Koren asked if any other libraries had attached their holding symbol to the project records we had contributed to the OCLC database. Sue said that only the record for Autocat showed holdings, and that was probably from the time everyone had been calling it up and commenting on it. There is no way to know if any libraries have exported a record to their local systems. We ourselves have not attached our holdings symbols to the records contributed by other libraries. Ellen McGrath wondered if any special permissions or approaches should be required before we attached our symbol to a bibliographic record for an electronic resource. The consensus seemed to be that the same approaches used in acquiring non-electronic resources should be followed.
Rick McRae wondered how much depth of subject heading analysis should be provided in cataloging a WWW homepage: just subject headings applicable to the homepage in general or also providing subject headings for each linkage. The consensus was that only subject headings applicable to the homepage being cataloged should be provided.
NOON NEWS:
Sue reviewed what she planned to cover at the 16 November Noon News in Room 127 UGL. She will provide a handout listing addresses of the CIRG homepage, the OCLC Internet Cataloging project homepage, and of the InterCat (Cataloging of Internet Resources) homepage.
FUTURE OF COMMITTEE:
Gayle Hardy-Davis asked about the life expectancy of CIRG. Will it be needed in the future? Ellen McGrath said that while the ideal would be to have the identification, selection, and cataloging of internet resources of interest to the UB community incorporated within the general workflows of the appropriate areas she feared that without the committee little in this area would actually be done. The others agreed that CIRG would continue to be needed for the foreseeable future.
NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be sometime in January 1996.
Minutes prepared by Judith Hopkins.
