MINUTES

The minutes of the 6th meeting (24 July 1995) were approved with one correction: date of meeting was corrected from 22 to 24 July.

CONTRIBUTED RECORDS

Sue Neumeister reported that 13 records had been input into OCLC. She then displayed those records for group discussion. Several points were raised including the decision to use single dates for documents such as the Bibliography of Funeral and Burial Practices (OCLC 32965047, BISON ECE1482); UB Guide to Green Computing (OCLC 32933507, BISON ECF6944); Ethnobotany and paleontology (OCLC 32965110, BISON ECF8381); and References on the American Indian Use of Fire in Ecosystems (OCLC 32965130, ECE1435) -- all of which do not indicate that they are updated (although some may be) and use open-ended dates for documents such as Projectile Point Types (OCLC 32965054, BISON ECE1437) which do indicate ongoing additions (i.e., "a neverending bibliography.)

It was also decided that in accord with format integration, the 500 notes "Title on menu screen: ...." would be deleted and replaced with the following:

246:1 :$iTitle on menu screen:$a[title]

(even though this will not trace in the current version of NOTIS)

In the case of listserv records, the group agreed to combine the notes that list the date the discussion list was founded and the listowner information into one note. It was also agreed that the listowner's address should be included in that particular note (as the only other place it appears is the 856 which will be suppressed from public view) The new note should read something like this:

Founded in Jan. 1994 by listowner: Gail Wood (woodg@snyalfva.cc.alfredtech.edu)

WWW SITES

Moving on to web sites, the group looked at a couple of records that Sue Neumeister had been experimenting with. One question she had was how many tracings to make for all the various mirror sites. The suggestion was made to post this question to the Intercat discussion list.

INTERNET JOURNALS

Linette Koren announced that BISON now had a record for SEL's first Internet serial with a paid subscription: The Chicago Journal of Theoretical Computer Science. When the group looked at the record several problems surfaced. Apparently the 538, 556, 516 fields do not display in serials. Also, the holding information no longer matched the change that had been implemented earlier, perhaps wiped out by the BISON update the previous weekend. And lastly, the group felt that some coordination was needed between those cataloging Internet serials and the CIRG group. Sue Neumeister said that she would investigate all these problems.

SUBJECT HELP

Lara Bushallow-Wilbur and Ellen Greenblatt requested help in determining the subject matter of a listserv that they have been attempting to catalog: FNORD-L, the New Ways of Thinking List. It's available through USENET as bit.listserv.fnord-l. The current owner doesn't read or contribute to the list much anymore, just performs routine maintenance, and apparently the list has diverged considerably since its inception. Any help in establishing just what it's about, or better yet coming up with subject headings, would be greatly appreciated!!

STATE PUBLICATIONS?

Ellen McGrath asked if the question about whether bibliographic records for Internet items with State University of New York at Buffalo in the 260 (publication) field should be considered state publications and coded appropriately (s for state) in the fixed fields (govt pub -- OCLC; govt --BISON) had ever been resolved. The group agreed to implement this procedure.

NEXT MEETING

The next meeting was scheduled for Monday, 11 September, 1995, at 2 pm in 223 Lockwood.

Minutes prepared by Ellen Greenblatt.
