MINUTES
The minutes of the 7th meeting (14 August 1995) were approved.
PROBLEMS WITH SPECIAL CHARACTERS
Sue reported that in the BISON public display of the record for Minority Health Newsletter, an underline character in the URL was displaying as a bracket. At Ellen McGrath's suggestion it was agreed that we speak to Mark Ludwig and provide him with copies of the recent discussion on Intercat relating to display of special characters.
WEB SITES
Following up on the discussion on treatment of mirror sites at the 7th meeting, Sue reported that in inputting records for Web sites in OCLC, she had provided multiple |u in the 856 field, one for each mirror site, along with a note to use the closest site. In the record in BISON, however, she had shown only the closest site.
LISTSERV LISTS
Several committee members reported on the lists (on UBVM) whose listowners they had contacted for information about their lists. It was agreed that whenever a committee member contacted a listowner that news should be announced on UBCIRG-L to prevent others from contacting the same listowner. In general the collection development members of each committee team are choosing lists in his or her area of responsibility.
Ellen McGrath:
AAUA-L
ABUSE-L
EUEARN-L
SILS-L
TWATCH-L
Sue Neumeister:
DSSHE-L (record already done)
BUSETH-L
POLAND-L
Diane Ward:
MAKEDON
Lara Bushallow-Wilbur & Ellen Greenblatt:
ANTHRO-L
CPSI-L
GRUNGE-L
FNORD-L
ICWP-L
LIBJOB-L
NETTRAIN
SABRES-L
SECHUM-L
SUNYTRC
UB-VLNCE
WMSPRT-L
WPWIN-L
Following brief discussion of some points related to the cataloging of GRUNGE-L and SABRES-L the question was raised as to whether or no we should catalog lists not archived. It was agreed that we should; that persons interested in the topics discussed by the list should not be deprived of the opportunity to be alerted to the existence of the list and thus to subscribe to it.
As for the question of whether to provide an explicit note saying that a list was not archived, or to let the absence of an explicit "Archived" note speak for itself, Rick McRae questionned the appropriateness of providing negative information. The final consensus, however, was that we should provide a note saying: "Not archived."
To the question of whether or not all records we created on BISON should be entered into OCLC, the answer was Yes. As this was an experimental project we should not be making judgments as to the relative usefulness to others of some material. No matter how local the interest seemed on the surface, there could be others elsewhere who would find it of interest.
PUBLICITY:
Sue noted that a number of reference staff were ignorant of this project and the records we were adding to BISON for electronic monographic resources. Several suggestions were made as to how this could be remedied.
Departmental meetings. Ellen McGrath said she had distributed copies of sample records input into BISON at the monthly meeting of the Law Library staff. Celeste Neyerlin had made an announcement at an HSL staff meeting. All staff at UGL had been informed.
Noon News: Sue will investigate the possibility of our giving a Noon News in November with online demonstrations of the records we have input into BISON. A tentative date would be November 16. [Date has been confirmed].
Articles in UBLIB-L and Library News.
It was suggested that a form be put on the UBCIRG homepage asking for suggestions from library staff for electronic items to be cataloged. As Ellen McGrath noted, we need to get library staff to think of electronic resources when they do collection development.
SERIAL RECORDS:
It was noted that in the public display for the Chicago Journal of Computer Science the 538 field was not displaying as the first note. (Cf. minutes of Meeting 6 where it had been noted that the 538, 556, and 516 fields did not display at all in serial records; we are making progress!). Sue will follow-up.
OTHER MATERIALS WE MIGHT CATALOG:
Among the items suggested were the home pages for Buffalo and Niagara Falls, for various local radio or TV stations, for the Buffalo Bills, and for various University departments. Also, while our charge limits us to monographic materials, Sue will speak to John Edens about cataloging the Web version of The Reporter.
NEXT MEETING: The next meeting was scheduled for Monday, 16 October at 2:00 pm in 223 Lockwood (site tentative).
Between now and the next meeting committee members are asked to start cataloging Web pages, preferably local ones, identifying each that we are working on through UBCIRG-L so as to prevent duplication of effort.
Minutes prepared by Judith Hopkins.
