CENTRAL TECHNICAL SERVICES: AN INTRODUCTION

Central Technical Services (CTS) is a major unit in the University Libraries. CTS staff are responsible for managing an acquisitions budget in excess of four million dollars; for acquiring material for all areas of the University Libraries except Health Sciences and Law and for managing the related financial records; for cataloging all or some material for all locations except the Law Library; for checking-in periodicals and other material on subscription or standing order; and for the binding of periodicals and other library materials. CTS also receives and catalogs publications received through U.S., New York State, Canadian, and European Communities depositories.

The responsibility for maintenance, including authority control, of the UB Libraries Catalog rests with CTS. To accomplish these functions CTS is divided into two departments: Acquisitions and Cataloging.

The Libraries' Preservation program and mail and delivery operations are also part of CTS.

Gathered here are documents about CTS, staff, policies and procedures, manuals, cataloging and acquisitions tools, links to other technical services, information about the Libraries' Preservation program and Mail and delivery operation, and links to sites related to preservation, mail, and shipping.
