NEW HEADINGS
LIST
NAME AUTHORITY PORTION
Name authority headings on the
New Headings List (NHL) are numbered:
0 for personal names
1 for corporate names
2 for conference names
3 for series or uniform titles.
These particular headings are then searched on OCLC.
Instructions for completion of authority work follow.
OCLC
MATCH
- Export matched heading onto a disk.
- Pass through the GTO (Generic Transfer Overlay) for export
into BISON.
- Search
BISON to locate the exported authority record with the
command -- LTGL fin jx ........... (add heading name)
- Compare found heading to the bibliographic record (bib record
number appears after GL) on the New Heading List.
- Verify a match by checking name, title and/or subject matter
of bibliographic record against the information provided in the
authority record.
- Code the matched authority record with the appropriate usage
code (see
New Heading List example)
- Add a 690 local note including initials and date.
- Cross out name on list.
- Search through similar names on the
BISON
screen for misspelling, no dates attached, no death date and
variant forms.
- Change the names in the bibliographic record to correspond
with the established heading.
NO OCLC MATCH
- Search BISON and compare the name on the heading list to
the name in the 245 $c field (statement of responsibility).
- Attach a bibliographic record printout to the New Heading
List sheet if both are the same so as to accommodate the person
creating a
NACO record.
- Place a zero before the name on the New Heading List.

- Search in BISON to see if variant is established.
IF ESTABLISHED:
- Check for proper usage coding and add a 690 local note
with initials and date.
- Add a 4XX to the BISON authority record making necessary
cross-references.
- Change T/EVAL in fixed field from "n" to "a" if no other
cross-references were provided.
- Add a $d NBuU to 040 field.
- Add a 690 local note with initials, date and EVAL, (690::ch ;
6/95 EVAL)
- Cross name off the sheet.
IF NOT ESTABLISHED:
- Make a second search on OCLC for
variant continuing with instructions for OCLC MATCH or NO OCLC
MATCH.
QUESTIONABLE MATCHES
(Names appearing on the list with similar but not definite OCLC
matches and are exported into BISON)
- Search bibliographic title in the online catalog section
(cho OL) of OCLC for a DCLC "a" match (considered AACR2, thereby
acceptable by LC) so as to ascertain a definite link to the
similar name which was exported into BISON, or
- Search the name in the catalog section (cho OL) of OCLC for
DCLC "a" similar bibliographic records to ascertain any definite
links to the name exported.
- Continue with instructions for OCLC MATCH or NO OCLC
MATCH.
HEADINGS ESTABLISHED BY ANOTHER LIBRARY
- Claim record by typing LTGL CLAR on command line of the
proper name authority record in BISON.
- Add a 690 local note with name and date. Do not remove 690
note with original inputting library initials and date.
