Errors associated with unlinked item records (identified by AZ record number) are generally ignored since the records will be reviewed when the item is relinked or if the record is for non-library material placed on reserve. However, the size of the error report could be reduced if reserve areas would use a class type of "T" (local classification) for non-library material which is placed on reserve.
Two types of call numbers generate large numbers of errors each day. Pre-20th century NLM classification numbers used in the History of Medicine Collection at the Health Sciences Library are constituted differently from current NLM numbers. This difference results in the numbers failing to be validated by the NOTIS checker for NLM numbers. Additionally, in some NLM numbers which otherwise would pass validation, the use of text such as "[Tests $c Section]" causes the validation process to fail.
The second major area which causes problems is with some Dickinson classification numbers used by the Music Library for scores.
Technical service areas are supplied with a copy of the error report monthly.
