WHEN TO CREATE AN MHLD
[MARC HOLDINGS RECORD]

The general rule is to create an MHLD if the collation of the original publication dictates.

Create an MHLD under the following circumstances:

Do not create an MHLD for a title which in print format is a single piece but is issued in multiple microformat pieces.

But do create an MHLD for a multi-piece work in a format other than print (2 fiche or 3 diskettes, etc.) if the title was never published in print. However, if the title which was never published in print is a periodical, serial, or monographic set the content of the MHLD should reflect holdings as volumes, years, or whatever is appropriate but not as the physical format (fiche, cassette, etc.).

When part of a title, which in print format was a single item but in another format is multi-part, is missing, use one or two approaches for indicating these parts of the format which are held. Add a um= note that, for example, fiche 2 is missing or create an MHLD and indicate what parts are held.
