Brief BISON records can be found by doing a series of title searches.
Records for U.S. federal depository documents lacking full catalog records can be found by doing the title search DOC 1. This search will result in a list of brief records arranged by year and month, based on the date of the creation of the brief record. U.S. depository material which lacks a catalog record is not held in CTS. Instead a brief record is created, the item is linked, and the piece is released for shelving. The added title entry of DOC [year month] is CTS' means of accessing brief records for U.S. documents. As full records become available from GPO or local original cataloging the brief records are replaced by the full record. Titles which are awaiting original cataloging can be located through one of two title searches: DOCORIG (material in paper format) or DOCMF(Material on microfiche.) This material is located in the appropriated documents area; it is not being held in CTS.
MICROFORM SETS
Microform sets which consist of titles for which individual catalog records are needed are cataloged temporarily as a set, and the material is marked and released for shelving in the appropriate library. These temporary records contain an added title entry of "Collection level record Microform set". A search on this title entry will retrieve all microform sets for which individual title level records have not been created.
Requests for immediate cataloging of any title held in a CTS backlog can be made by completing the appropriate portion of the BISONTRACE/Retrieval Form and sending it to CTS. An electronic version of this form is in preparation.
