Charge
This task force is charged with exploring and providing items for discussion relating to the feasibility of providing a panel of experts to handle AV/media cataloging questions from OLAC members.
History
CAPC was given the charge to provide a venue for discussion regarding the issue of installing a panel of experts to answer questions from OLAC members. At the CAPC meeting in St. Paul the discussion centered on the expert answers being provided through the OLAC list. Thus, when AV cataloging questions are asked, someone from the panel answers the question. The intent of this would be to make sure the answers would be correct. The outcome of the discussion was that the OLAC list is a discussion list--why do we need a panel? And if there is a panel, how are the members to be selected? Before the OLAC conference in St. Paul, there was much discussion on the list about the "expert panel" issue and the majority of opinions did not favor having a panel of experts for the list.
Concerns
It seems that the issue of having an "expert panel" available for member cataloging questions has become too difficult to assess when it is connected to the OLAC list. In order to discuss the feasibility of having some type of "body" or "panel" to provide expert answers to OLAC member questions, the Task Force decided to take the issue out of the context of the OLAC list. We have come up with a list of items to discuss. It is not the Task Force's intent to say, "yes, there should be an expert panel." The intent is to provide a place for discussion of the ideas, issues, etc. from members. Hopefully the outcome will be a yes or no answer to having an expert panel and if the answer is yes, how is it structured and put in place?
