Cataloging for the 21st Century Training Program
Call For Trainers
The Library of Congress and the Association of Library Collections and
Technical Services (ALCTS) is seeking trainers for a new training initiative.
BACKGROUND
In November 2000, the Bicentennial Conference on Bibliographic Control for the
New Millennium was held to bring together authorities in the cataloging and
metadata communities to discuss issues in discovery and access to Web
resources. One of the resulting recommendations from that conference was the
provision of appropriate training and continuing education to improve
bibliographic control of selected Web resources. Training materials for the
first course (Rules & Tools for Cataloging Internet Resources) have been
developed and will soon be available from the Library of Congress Cataloging
Distribution Service. A critical piece of the program will be the trainers.
This is your opportunity to share your electronic resource cataloging
experience with others and to help build a community of knowledgeable
electronic resource catalogers.
Below are specific details on the training program, train-the-trainer
sessions, and the qualifications that we are seeking in would-be trainers.
The deadline for applications is April 15, 2005.
- Initial course: Rules & Tools for Cataloging Internet Resources
- This course covers the basic principles of online resource cataloging
using MARC/AACR2R. The course provides instruction and exercises in cataloging all three issuance types (monograph, serial, integrating resource) according to current national standards.
- Training materials. The course materials will include an instructor's
manual, a trainee's manual, and a PowerPoint presentation.
- The course is planned as a 2-day class with lecture and exercises.
- Since two days is a short time, emphasis will be placed on how cataloging
practices differ between different forms of issuance. The focus will be on
problem solving, decision-making and where to go for additional information.
- Train the trainer session.
- When and where: Friday, June 24th, 2005. Chicago (in conjunction with
ALA). Additional sessions may be planned for the future.
- Format: A one-day training class given by a pair of trainers. The
training material will be made available in advance and trainers are expected
to review the material before the training session. Topics covered in the
training session will include a content overview (focusing on the exercises), methodology, and program administration. Training will be limited to 25 participants.
- Costs: There is no charge for the training. Housing and food will be up to you and your institution.
- Responsibilities following training
- Working in pairs. Our plan for the training program is that workshops
will be given by a pair of trainers. You may wish to select another person who you will always train with but this is not necessary.
- You will be contacted by sponsors once they have received the official
list of names from the Library of Congress. You will work out dates and other arrangements directly with the provider.
- It is desirable that you be able to lead at least one workshop a year.
There is no obligation for follow-up with participants following the training but you may wish to make yourself available.
- Communicate with fellow trainers, and with CDS providing general feedback on the program.
- Funding
- Your expenses for giving a training session will be provided by the
training sponsors. Costs to your institution will be in time off the job.
Application and qualifications. Please supply the following information:
Online resource cataloging experience: A minimum of 2 years using national
standards (MARC21/AACR2/LCRI or NLCRI); experience cataloging other formats is desirable.
Training experience: Experience in providing class room training, workshops,
etc. within your institution, at conferences, or special training events.
Availability: Demonstrate institutional support and be able to attend the
train-the-trainer sessions in June 2005. Following that, you should be
available to give at least one training sessions per year. A separate email or fax (206-685-8743) from your supervisor is requested along with this
application.
References: Please provide 2 or more names (including telephone and email
addresses) of persons who can attest to your cataloging and training
experience.
Final date for submission of application: April 15, 2005. You will be
notified once the list of trainers is finalized.
