Bound-Withs

We will proceed with plans to handle bound-withs through the use of key word searching of BISON record numbers. Please follow the procedure outlined below.

Retrospective material

  1. The call number in the BISON copy holdings record for each title will include the complete range of volume and issue numbers which are bound together.

    E50l.C3 no.1-5
    D8.C3 v.l,no.1-10

If the volume is complete, indicate volume number only.

    DB.C3 v.2.

  2. Serials and sets which are part of a series classified under a common call number and which are also bound-withs will be treated in the same way as single volume works which are classified under a common series call number.

    JK31.C3 no.6-12,etc.

  3. Create a linked item record for only the first title of the bound-with.

  4. For titles other than the first, add a copy level note in a separate subfield a. The note will inform the user that circulation status is available on another record.

um=For circulation status enter k=ABC1234 [substitute the BISON record number for the first title of the bound-with for the one shown in the example]

Current material

Avoid the creation of additional bound-withs by rebinding each title separately except in those cases when the bound-with was created by a publisher other than a reprint publisher.

Microforms

This procedure is also appropriate for microfilms which consist of more than one title on a single reel. Treat microfilms the same way as hard copies.
