Methods of Leaf Attachment

Recasing - (least damaging)

Keeping original sewing - retain original binding - new cover only
Can't recase book unless originally sewn (no concern with margin)

  1. Must be sewn
  2. Signature format (sections)
  3. All Sections need to be intact
  4. Paper quality

Sewing thru Fold (limited) - good for pamphlets to open flat
  1. Must be signature format (loose) not connected
  2. Paper strong
  3. Can't sew less than 3 pages - must be thicker

*Not used for monographs - primarily for periodicals

Oversew - Main stay of industry, strongest, binder cuts edge
  1. 5/8" margin - floating margin not good (glue)
  2. Paper quality important for sewing
  3. Signature or individual leaves unimportant since binder cuts edge
  4. Usage important - oversew strong - if photocopy not the best - does not open flat
  5. Stitches close together
  6. If paper heavy, do not oversew

Pockets (Paper or buckram) - should be acid free - no metal clasps

Send only thick items (1/4" or more)

Double Fanning - gluing

  1. Binder trims off old glue and re-glue
  2. Coated papers do not glue well
  3. Individual sheets, no signatures, no sewing originally
  4. Better opening better for copying - not as strong
  5. Covers off for gluing

Side Sew - sewing along-edges - Binder decides (Not used frequently, gluing used)
  1. Book no more than 1/2" thick
  2. Used for thin books
  3. Individual leaves
  4. Loose openability

*Fold outs should be noted in all types
