OVERSIZE MATERIALS

The following is a summary of the present policy on the treatment of oversize materials.

  1. Size Requirements
  2. Reference Materials
  3. Atlases (LML)
  4. Map Room Materials
  5. Abbreviations/Format
  6. Multi-volume Sets

I. Size Requirements for Oversize Designation

  APL 36cm+

  Atlas see separate list

  Doc 31cm+

  Lock 31cm+ ("N"s and "TR"s are 36cm+)

  Map Rm see separate
          list

  Math 31cm+

  Pol Rm 31cm+

  Ref no oversize

  SEL 31cm+

  UGL no oversize

II. Reference Materials

CTS will adhere to the following policy:

There will be no automatic designation of oversize for reference collections for areas serviced by CTS. You may designate an item as Reference Oversize at the time you review new receipts in the Acquisitions Department. If you add 'oversize' to the streamer, the Cataloging Department will catalog and mark the item as Reference Oversize. You may also request that the item be changed to Reference Oversize after it has been cataloged and sent to a reference collection. For the latter situation, follow the same procedure which you now use for requesting that an item, regardless of size, be moved in or out of a reference collection.

III. ATLASES (for LML only)

Atlases can fall into any combination of these four catagories:

 		reference oversize
 		stacks regular

   LOCKWOOD 31cm or more

if in Ref: Ref if in stacks: Oversize
                    Atlas G
                    GA 52
                    251 B2
                    H2

   LOCKWOOD 30cm or less

if in Ref: Ref if in stacks: GA
                    Atlas 279
                    GA B88
                    263
                    S2

IV. MAP ROOM ATLASES

Although the Map Room is located in SEL it should be treated as a branch of SEL. Therefore all materials processed for this location (maps and atlases only) will have the following location designator:

                   Map Rm not: SEL
                   Atlas Map Rm
                                      Atlas
All atlas purchased for SEL will be kept in the Map Room. Call numbers would read:
                   Map Rm not: SEL
                   Atlas Atlas
                   G G1201
                   1201
The Map Room has no oversize designation.

symbol and is always typed using upper and lower case letters.

If a multi-volume set includes one or more oversized books (31cm +)
and the rest are regular size, assign the Oversize designator to the complete set.
