Preservation Council

The Role of the Preservation Council

In the early years of the University Libraries' Preservation program the Preservation Committee played an active role in the program's development. The Preservation Council is the successor to that committee.

The Council is an important advisory body and assists in setting direction for the Preservation program, in pursing the full range of activities associated with the program, and in realizing the program's current five-year goals.

The Council is charged with the following:

  • monitoring goals and objectives of the program as part of the development and implementation of the overall Preservation program
  • advising the Preservation Officer and the Director of Central Technical Services as how best to realize the goals and objectives of the Preservation program's current five-year plan
  • assisting in the compilation of an annual Preservation calendar
  • assisting in the preparation of an operational plan, budget, and report
  • participating in the identification of projects for which grant funding would be appropriate and in the identification of possible sources of external funding
  • assisting in the preparation of successive five-year plans

Specifics of the charge are subject to revision as changing conditions may warrant.

Members of the Council will be invited to assist Preservation staff in pursuing specific aspects of the program such as preservation awareness and education, environmental concerns, and planning for disaster recovery activities. Members of the Council may also be asked to represent the Libraries at some preservation-related meetings or workshops.
