ABOUT THIS WEB SITE

The Three Geeks; © Rich Koslowski

"Comic Books for Young Adults" was created in support of a graduate course taught at the State University of New York at Buffalo's Department of Library and Information Studies. The course, titled "Resources and Services for Young Adults" (LIS 535), is taught by Dr. Denice Adkins, Dr. Judith Robinson, and others.

The Web site is designed to introduce librarians (as well as teachers and parents) to the rich, diverse offerings from today's comics book publishers, and to encourage the acquisition of comic books and graphic novels in libraries serving young adults.

The site is compiled and maintained by librarian Michael R. Lavin, who is best known as the author of such reference books as Business Information: How to Find It, How to Use It (Oryx Press) and Understanding the Census (Epoch Books). Mr. Lavin is a recipient of the American Library Association's prestigious BRASS/Gale Research Award for Excellence in Business Librarianship, and he also serves as a visiting instructor on the faculty of the University's Department of Library and Information Studies.

None of which has anything to do with this Web site.

In addition to being a librarian, Mr. Lavin is an avid, life-long fan of comic books, having read and collected them since 1963. In recent years, he has begun publishing articles about comic books, and presenting talks on the subject to librarians and teachers around the country. "Comic Books for Young Adults" is a way to share this enthusiasm with librarians and others unfamiliar with comics, and to suggest reasons why this overlooked medium belongs in America's libraries.
