Music Literature (ML's) and Music Theory (MT's).
Located: in general stacks.
Circulation: regular (except for a few catalogues and
dictionaries).
The Music Library holds many books which, though they are highly relevant to many music studies, are not classified in the usual music literature classes, ML or MT. These include books on dance, research methods, liturgical subjects, and others.
Located: a few are on the Reference shelves but most are
shelved following the MT's.
Circulation: regular.
Oversize materials are too large for the regular shelves. BISON call numbers indicate Oversize.
Location: shelves in rear of library.
Circulation: regular.
The Music Library's general periodicals are classed in ML/1 (American) and ML/5 foreign, including English language titles published outside of the United States). Unbound issues may be in boxes at the end of the bound volumes or available from the Circulation Desk. Some current issues are displayed on the rack near the photocopy machine.
Located: stacks on right side of library.
Circulation: restricted to use within the library.
Scores are arranged on the shelves by their classification number according to the Dickinson Classification for Music. The arrangement is by medium:
A fuller explanation of the Dickinson Classification and a guide to its use is available in the online Guide or in printed form on the Handout Rack.
Located: shelves on left side of library.
Circulation: regular.
The piano part of many chamber ensembles (e.g., that for piano-string trio) is in fact the score, because it displays all of the parts. The piano part is classified as a score, bound and shelved for study use. If the individual parts for the other instruments (e.g., for violin and cello) were received with the piano part, they are kept available for use, unbound and in a different location, and their availability is indicated in the BISON catalogue record for the score.
Located: the bound score on the regular shelves; the separate unbound
(incomplete) parts available from the Circulation Desk.
Circulation: scores may be checked out by themselves or with their unbound parts.
Because the bound scores are primarily reference copies for study, not performance, they may not be marked up; complete sets of parts for most of the standard ensemble repertoire are provided in the Parts Collection.
The Music Library maintains a collection of complete parts for chamber ensembles. Materials in the Parts Collection are definitely intended for performance, not reference use, and may, therefore, be marked up.
Located: the Parts Collection is contained in the lateral files on the rear left wall of the library.
Circulation: regular.
Gesamtausgaben are collected editions of individual composers' works; they are often the most definitive editions available. Helpful guides to their contents are Heyer's Historical Sets... and the separate thematic catalogues for some composers classified in M/055 and shelved before the general score collection.
Located: Classified in M/05. Located on north side of library adjacent to
the Denkmäler collection.
Circulation: restricted to use within the library.
Thematic catalogues are the most reliable bibliographies of an individual composer's works. They may also be detailed indexes to the contents of Gesamtausgaben.
Located: classified in M/055. Shelved before the general score collection.
Circulation: restricted to use within the library.
Denkmäler are multi-volume sets, issued serially, devoted to music of a chronological period, a geographical area, or a style of composition. Most volumes include a scholarly editorial apparatus.
Located: volumes are in M/01 classification or, if in another class,
bear yellow dots on their spine indicating Denkmäler status and are located between M/01 and M/05. BISON catalogue records for M/01 items are not so labeled, but those for other classes are designated "Denkmäler" to indicate their location.
Circulation: restricted to use within the library.
Located: in the last row of the middle section of the library. Designated by red dot on spine.
Circulation: regular.
These scores are primarily avant-garde scores in unusual formats. They may include loose sheets, celluloid pages, scales, or other mechanical devices.
Located: The Flat Cases are the large green map cases near the photocopy machine.
Circulation: restricted to one week. Inquire at the Circulation Desk for access.
Rare and fragile materials are shelved in locked cases in the Treasure Room. Facsimiles of early printed music manuscripts are classed in M/04 and shelved in the Treasure Room cases.
Circulation: restricted to use within the library. Inquire at the Circulation Desk for access.
The Music Library's sound recording collections of LPs, CDs, and cassette tapes includes Classical, Eastern Classical, ethnic, jazz, rock, and popular music. Note: many LPs catalogued before 1985 are listed only in the card catalogue, not in BISON. Please search in BISON and the card catalogue for sound recordings, and ask for a librarian if you do not find what you need.
Videos: The Music Library has a growing collection of videocassettes and laserdiscs with performances of opera, ballet, jazz, and world music and dance.
Located: recordings and videos are shelved behind the Circulation Desk.
Inquire there for use.
NOTE: Students who need to use a recording in class may request an exception to the usual circulation policy. Taping may violate copyright laws, and is not permitted in the Music Library.
The microfilm collection includes literature about music, musical scores, dissertations, theses, and manuscripts including important manuscripts like the Old Hall and Chantilly. BISON catalogue records are labelled Mic-1. A microfilm reader is available in the Microform Area. Inquire at the Circulation Desk for use.
The Music Library owns several hundred theoretical and early historical treatises and many German periodicals and dissertations in this format. Catalogue records are marked MIC-2 and MIC-9. A reader is located in the Microform Area. Inquire at the Circulation Desk for use.
The microform aids are printed shortcuts to aid in the use of the microform collection. The library's microform call number is noted on the printed volume.
Located: above the Slide Catalogue in the Microform Area.
The Slide Collection consists of more than 2,000 slides of paintings, sculpture, architecture, and musical manuscripts. Access to the Collection is provided by a card catalogue located in the Microform Area. Slides may be used to illustrate examples of musical instruments, performance practice, liturgical scenes, and various types of notation.
Located: the slides and the Slide Catalogue are located by the microform cabinets. To view slides, inquire at the Circulation Desk.
A variety of materials is available; ask a Reference Librarian for assistance when you see a Pamphlet file record in BISON.
