Title: Webern's legacy (symposium)
Panelists: Maryanne Amacher, Cornelius Cardew, Henri Pousseur, Allen Sapp, Niccolò Castiglioni; Lukas Foss, moderator.

Summary:

Cardew and Castiglioni suggest that Webern is not directly relevant to today’s music. Cardew says ‘Webern is something that happened’. The reason for Webern’s influence is the ‘spritual convalescence which was needed after the [Second World] war’. Castiglioni says ‘The transformation of Webern’s music from expressionism to pure music is a good example for today’.

Pousseur disagrees with Cardew and Castiglioni, believing that Webern is still absolutely relevant to music today. Pousseur says that Webern is ‘the first [composer] to overcome the difficulties of Classical music’. Pousseur discusses his Quintette à la Memoire d’Anton Webern, and its debt to Webern.

There follows a discussion between Cardew, Pousseur and Foss about the ‘life changing’ effect of Webern’s music. Finally, Pousseur says the lack of ‘dterminism’ in Webern’s language leads to mobile form, where the performer is no longer a machine. Cardew disagrees, saying ‘The idea that the performer is a machine is a naïve idea that comes from Webern’. Pousseur responds by suggesting that Webern’s scores are not as ‘precise’ as 1950s Darmstadt.
