I. Personal documents. Folders 1-4. Two vitae, travel vouchers, and a voter registration card.
II. Manuscripts and Typescripts.
A. Writings by Feldman. Folders 5-15. Two manuscript and six typescript writings by Feldman, chiefly fragmentary. A transcription of all the writings, with the exception of one typescript, is included.
B. Musical Fragments. Folder 16. Five unidentified musical fragments.
III. Printed Articles by Morton Feldman. Folders 17-53. The folders are alphabetically arranged by article title. Where an article appears in a foreign translation, it is filed under the English title, followed by the language of the translation. Additional program notes written by Feldman can be found in Series VIII, Programs and Announcements.
IV. Feldman Interviews and Conversations. Folders 54-71. Transcriptions of seventeen interviews or conversations with Morton Feldman. The folders are alphabetically arranged by name of the interviewer and then alphabetically by title.
V. Writings for, or about, Feldman. Folders 72-88. Arranged alphabetically by author, the series includes a small number of unpublished writings, including Brian O'Doherty's eulogy for Feldman, an unidentified poem dedicated to Feldman, and some typescript notes by Barney Childs about Feldman's music. Additional writings about Feldman are located in Series VIII, Programs and Announcements and Series IX, Clippings.
VI. Subject Files. Folders 89-98. Programs, clippings, and articles collected by Feldman. Alphabetically arranged by name of subject and subdivided into two subseries: A. People; B. Topics.
VII. Correspondence. Folders 100-198. The correspondence has been divided as follows:
A. General. Folders 99-152. Correspondence, 1958-1987, arranged alphabetically by incoming or outgoing correspondent, then chronologically within each folder. Only three letters are from Feldman (to James Coover, Director of the Music Library at the State University of New York at Buffalo, soprano Joan La Barbara and to Maria Runfola of the Music Department at the State University of New York at Buffalo). The subject content includes both business and personal matters, but is chiefly related to Feldman's career.
B. Awards. Folders 153-154. Notices of awards granted to Feldman, arranged alphabetically by issuing agency.
C. Business: Contracts, Royalties, Commissions, and Publishing. Folders 155-163. Arranged alphabetically by corporate name and then chronologically within each folder.
D. Mark Rothko Foundation. Folders 164-189. Letters received 1971-1972 from twenty-five applicants, or people recommending them, for the Mark Rothko Fund, which granted funds to older artists, writers, and musicians. All but one of the letters were addressed to the treasurer of the Mark Rothko Foundation, Bernard J. Reis. (One letter was addressed to Theodoros Stamos). The letters and supporting materials were forwarded to Feldman for his recommendations. There is one leaf in Feldman's hand with his recommendations regarding the applications. The folder containing this leaf is placed first in the series, followed by folders alphabetically arranged by name of applicant or recommended person.
E. Student Papers. Folders 190-197. Papers written by graduate students in Feldman's Advanced Orchestration Class at the State University of New York at Buffalo, 1980-1981. There are two papers by all but two of the students. None of the papers bear letter grades, but there are a few comments by Feldman written in the margins. The folders are alphabetically arranged by student name and then alphabetically by title of the paper.
VIII. Programs and Announcements. Folders 198-284. Announcements and programs arranged in chronological order from 1950-1999. When both announcements and programs are present for a single year, the folder of announcements is filed first. Four folders of undated announcements and programs are filed after the last dated folder; a folder of programs unrelated to performances of Feldman's music is filed last.
IX. Clippings. Folders 286-489. More than two hundred clippings from 1960-1997, arranged chronologically, and then alphabetically by name of the publication. Approximately 10 obituaries are included. Sources of clippings include newspapers and periodicals in the United States, Canada, England, Italy, France, The Netherlands, and Germany. A folder of undated clippings is placed last in the sequence.
X. Photographs. The collection of fifty-four photographs includes candid snapshots and more formal portraits. Others in the photographs include Barbara Monk Feldman, Nils Vigeland, Eberhard Blum, the members of the Kronos Quartet, and John Adams. More than a dozen of the shots were taken by Rolf Hanns at Darmstadt in 1986. The photographs have been roughly organized by size and then chronologically. Eight of the photographs (47-54) were printed from negatives received with the collection. An additional two portraits by Rolf Hanns and five photographs of scenes from the first performance of Feldman's Neither in June 1977 in Rome are housed in the Oversize Box at the end of the collection.
XI. Oversize. 1 box. Includes
oversized photographs, an award from the American Music Center, 1 poster from
a memorial concert held 1994 at the University at Buffalo, a negative
photocopy of an unidentified leaf of manuscript in French addressed to
"Cher John", and an unframed tempera on paper by Rolf Hanns, titled
Ultramarinblau. Also included is a box of twenty-two 35 mm slides,
chiefly of pages from Feldman's scores.
